PC Magazine agrees: Spyware Doctor works

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Antivirus 5.5I’ve been installing Spyware Doctor w/ Antivirus for several months now, and we run it constantly in the shop for removing difficult spyware, malware and virus infection. It even handles rootkits — these are really nasty little guys that most programs don’t even see.

Spyware Doctor with Antivirus 5.5 just earned PC Magazine Editors’ Choice in yesterday’s review. Here’s a quick overview:

“Bottom Line: Cleaning an infested system with this utility can be an adventure, with forced reboots and repeated scans. But the end result–a squeaky-clean system–is decidedly worthwhile. And the software does an excellent job of keeping malware from regaining a foothold in your newly pristine system.”

“Pros: Extremely thorough and accurate cleanup of malware-infested systems. Blocked installation of almost all malware. Updates in the background with no user interaction. “

“Cons: Slow scan and clean of malware-infested systems. Program had problems during scan and clean (all solved by full scan in Safe Mode). No local help system.”

This is a fair assessment of the program. There are sometimes performance issues, but if something has taken control of your system, this program has features to combat a whole gamut of attack methods. If you are attempting to salvage your computer yourself without doing a “factory restore”, you need to download Spyware Doctor 5.5.

Is anti-virus software any good anymore?

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

Good question. There doesn’t seem to be a real standout program lately – so I want to try them out for myself. The programs I’ve been installing and recommending – Spyware Doctor, AVG Anti-Virus, Webroot Spysweeper, NOD32 – plus a few more that I’m not too sure about – Norton 360, Trend Micro Internet Security, McAfee. I want to install these on a test machine and report back about how they work. If I don’t get to it right away, be patient. We’ve been pretty busy lately! Leave a comment if there is a program you want to know more about, or if you have a favorite or least favorite.

MySpace – Does it hurt your PC?

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

I don’t know. I think that the website itself does not cause problems, but the associated sites that offer free templates and customization probably do have spyware/adware as part of the deal. In other words, just visiting MySpace won’t hurt your computer, but logging in a downloading programs from other pages designed for MySpace is probably not a good idea.
